GNG Recreation is excited to partner with Phoenix Academy of Martial Arts to bring more opportunities to learn martial arts to our community.  Karate is an activity that helps children develop humility, self-control, integrity, discipline, perseverance, and compassion.  Instructor, Jeff Chandler, obtained his black belt in October 2015.  After moving to New Gloucester, he started attending classes at Phoenix Karate Academy in Auburn, Maine.  He was challenged to learn a new discipline and Sosai Hary and Sosai Donna Harris welcomed him with open arms and they say, "The rest is history."  Jeff began teaching a wide variety of students from toddlers to adults.  In the summer of 2016, Jeff expanded and began offering classes to Rise and Sine Daycare in his backyard.  He believes that the discipline students learn through karate is helpful in everyday life.  He is excited to share his skills with more children in our community!Classes will be separated by ages and will be offered in both Gray at the Newbegin Gym and in New Gloucester at the Community Building.  Scholarships are available.5:15-5:45pm Beginner Karate for kids in Pre K- 1st Grade5:45-6:30pm Beginner Karate for kids in 2nd-4th Grade6:30-7:15pm Beginner Karate for kids in 5th Grade and up.There may be some adjustments to the times as we see which ages are most interestedWednesday evenings in Gray @ Newbegin GymThursday evenings in New Glocuester @ the Community Building

The Jr. Basketball program is designed to introduce/build upon fundamental skills- dribbling, passing, shooting, court positioning, and game play.  Each age group will look a little different and the structure will be outlined below.  Our coaching staff will introduce, instruct, demonstrate, and referee the drills and games.Pre K- This group will focus on introducing and practicing dribbling, passing, and shooting the basketball in a fun and developmentally appropriate format.  This group will focus on skills and drills while also reinforcing expectations with following instructions, group participation, and parallel play with their friends.Kindergarten- This group will receive instruction and practice on fundamental skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting while also learning the difference between offense and defense.  The majority of each session will be skills and drills and we will work up to competitive games.1st Grade- This group will practice fundamental skills while introducing more details regarding rebounds, fouls, court positioning, and enhancing the understanding of the game.  The end of each session will be a cross-court scrimmage where players can practice the skills in a game format.  New for 2021, the 1st graders will also be split into scrimmage groups.  1st Graders will play scrimmages 5:30-6:15pm every other Monday evening in January.2nd Grade- This group will use drills to hone in on fundamental skills during the 10:30-11:15 time-slot.  In January, full court games will occur on Monday evenings.  The players will be divided (by the coaching staff) into 2 groups and will play every other Monday from 615-7pm. 3rd Grade- This group will come together each week for a 45 minute skills and drills session designed to build upon and strengthen foundational skills.  This group will be divided into groups and will play a full-court scrimmage after the skills and drills session every other week.  Half of the group will stay after skills and drills each week to play a full court scrimmage.  This part will begin week 1 so each group will have 3 games for the season.  3rd grade scrimmages will be from 12pm-12:45 on Saturdays.Monday evening Scrimmages for 1st and 2nd grade:  Jan 3, 10, 17, 24:  Each player in 1st and 2nd grade will play 2 dates. 1st Grade 5:30-6:15pm 2nd Grade 6:15-7pm As of now (10/22/21) we anticipate that players and coaches will be expected to wear masks indoors during the practices.  The guidance could change as youth are able to receive vaccinations, but this is how we're planning to operate at this time.  If you have specific questions, please feel free to reach out!
