Mary ready to present
In honor of the late Mary Sweeney Underwood, the community is holding a memory walk. Mary was a committed volunteer to the Town of Gray, serving on both the Recreation Committee and the Community Television Advisory Committee. She was an avid Nordic Walking enthusiast, and would be seen walking all over town with her "sticks."

Having personally gained strength and mobility thanks to Nordic Walking, Mary advocated Nordic Walking to anyone who would listen. She started a walking club, offered tutorials, and fundraised for Gray’s Recreation Department to have loanable walking sticks. What began locally soon expanded as other recreation departments in Southern Maine learned about her story. Mary visited many surrounding cities and towns to promote Nordic Walking to their recreation departments and older adults.

Please join us with or without walking sticks to honor Mary in the best way we know how: going for a walk! Registration is free, but if you'd like to make a donation all funds raised will go towards  improving our town’s public areas. The Recreation Department will loan out walking sticks to anyone who would like to use them (while supplies last).
